3 Months Later: 8 of the Best Switch Games
Nintendo has been sweeping the gaming world these past few months, most notably due to its new increasingly successful, home/mobile hybrid console, the Switch. Now reaching its 3-month mark since its release, there have been dozens of games to grace the popular console. But out of those some 50+ titles, there are a few that have really stood out amongst the crowd. Here’s a list of 8 of the best games to play on the Switch.
Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove
With the entire collection of the Shovel Knight series, this platformer gives players a ton of content mixed with excellent gameplay. Putting the platforming genre to the test and giving players a real challenge through three campaigns, Shovel Knight adds a nostalgic sense to the hybrid console and plenty of levels to conquer. The latest expansion, Specter of Torment, is told in prequel fashion while the gameplay has players using new skills like climbing walls and grinding on rails. A giant tower full of threats has the player climbing higher and higher, putting expert coordination and quick reflexes to use. All of this content, as well as the upcoming King Knight expansion, leaves plenty of hours to dump into the Shovel Knight series.
Lego City Undercover
The open world freedom of Lego City Undercover is enough to make any fan come back for more. With a GTA style gameplay – substituting the graphic content with Lego content – Undercover takes the player on an adventure where every brick smashed brings you closer to putting an end to the crime in Lego City. With 2-player co-op mode now on the Switch (which was not present on the Wii-U version), you and a friend can take part in taking down Rex Fury while exploring the huge city built from Legos and an entertaining storyline filled with exceptional homages to cinematic classics.
Snipperclips
Fun, addictive, multiplayer puzzles is a must have for a proper good time when enjoying the Switch with friends. Snipperclips provides a hilarious experience and exciting gameplay while either solving puzzles together with friends or taking each other on. Easy to pick up and play, this makes excellent use of the hybrid console’s mobile mode when you’re on the run and can’t partake in local co-op fun. A truly entertaining game making great use of Nintendo’s newest system.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
An obvious pick hits the list with the face of the Nintendo franchise. The popular kart-style racing game makes a grand appearance with the “Deluxe” version of Mario Kart 8. Complete with all the add-ons like extra tracks and all of the characters – including the extra characters featured in additional content – Mario Kart 8 Deluxe comes packed with the full karting experience. With online and battle modes, the Deluxe edition gives players a competitive and exciting performance.
Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition
With larger worlds than its Wii-U counterpart and the ease of taking your gaming on the go, Minecraft – one of the best-selling games in history – comes up big with the Nintendo Switch Edition. Although found on the Wii-U version as well, the colorful and lively Mushroom Kingdom brings everyone’s favorite moustached, suspender-wearing plumber to Minecraft. With fluid 60 fps when the Switch is docked, the newest Minecraft is definitely one of the best games out for the Switch console.
Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers
Yet another re-release of one of the most iconic fighting games in history. Not just a port of the classic, The Final Challengers adds two sort of new characters, Evil Ryu and Violent Ken. While the updated graphics aren’t staggering and yes, the price is very steep at $39.99, what the updated fighting title adds to the Switch is an entertaining and beloved title with all of the memorable Street Fighter action of the earlier years. For any hardcore fighting fan or just a casual pick-up-and-play attitude, Ultra is an instant classic for the Switch.
Disgaea 5 Complete
For all of those true RPG fans Disgaea 5 is a must-have for the Switch. Taking this beautiful and long adventure with you on the go is as rewarding as it is charming. The Complete edition adds up to seven more characters to add to your party as well as more side stories to keep the hours pouring in. With a number of titles to quench your RPG thirst later in the year, Disgaea 5 looks to be one of a kind in the turn-based style gameplay for the young console. Add well over 100 hours of gameplay filled with revenge, revolution and a thrilling story, Disgaea 5 Complete is a great addition to any Switch owners library.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
I know, obviously, right? Breath of the Wild not only outsold all of the other Switch titles, but outsold the Switch console itself. That’s only counting the Switch version of the game, too. In fact, chances are if you’re checking out this list, it’s because you’ve already made your way across Hyrule in the gorgeous adventure game. Yes, this latest Zelda game is one of, if not the reason to take the dive into Switch territory. With a huge map to discover complete with an enthralling journey and flawless gameplay, Breath of the Wild is a must-have for any Switch owner.
With a huge library of games currently available and an even longer list of future releases, Nintendo isn’t relying on unique console designs or first party games to drag out the rookie year of the hybrid system. There’s plenty more games outside of this list that are definitely worth a play, so let us know what Switch games are in your line-up!
